Osprey Feeding Chicks

Location, Date & Time of Observation:
2025-07-14
05:06 AM to 08:06 AM

Number of Adults Visible: 1

Number of Nestlings Visible: 1

Number of Fledglings Visible:

Weather Conditions: Overcast, humid 71 degrees

Other Activity: Dave Condra and his crew were here last Friday to band the chicks. Unfortunately, the youngest chic, Squirrel, was found dead in the marsh. Dave believes an owl killed it. Pauline, the mother, and Moose (first born) are healthy. I have not seen the Bob, the father in several days. I hope he is not a victim of an owl attack. On a more positive note, yesterday Moose spent the afternoon flapping his wings and attempting to try to hover.

Number of Fledglings Visible: 1

Weather Conditions: 75 degrees, 10 mph SE, clear

Other Activity: Female and single fledgling on the nest and male perched on platform 3. The fledgling was testing its wings and lifted off the nest briefly several times. The female flew from the nest at the same time as if to demonstrate that flying is a possibility.

Observation Method: from back porch

General Comments: I've been seeing as many as 4 osprey hunting off the Plum Island beach at the sand bars at the north end of the island. They are having trouble finding fish and the fish that they catch are very small. Typically small flounder. Recently I saw the Ring's Island male returning with a small fish and being attacked by a pair of osprey trying to steal the fish. I've not seen this before and think it may be a sign that the food supply is limited.

Name: Beth Cooper

Nest Name:
GLO-01 - KEA Platform

Adult Osprey Activity Observed:
Other (specify below)

Location, Date & Time of Observation:
2025-07-13
01:39 PM to 02:25 PM
at: Gloucester

Number of Adults Visible: 3

Number of Nestlings Visible:

Number of Fledglings Visible:

Weather Conditions: 71 degrees, wind SE 11 mph, partly cloudy.

Other Activity: There were two birds in the nest when I arrived, just hanging out, I believe a male and a female, hard to be certain between the distance and heat shimmer. Then, suddenly, there was a spat, and I believe the female chased the male away. Overhead, I heard a lot of noise, and when I looked up, there were two Osprey circling all around, a male and a female. The female eventually flew down into the nest, but the resident female chased her away. Then a male flew in, and the resident female flew off. Love this stuff! Very cool!

Observation Method: On foot with scope.

General Comments: I assume this pair has split due to nest failure, and one of the birds (probably the male) has found a new mate. : (
