Greenbelt has reached an agreement to purchase and permanently protect 66 acres of ecologically significant land at 133 Essex Street in Hamilton. Located adjacent to Chebacco Woods, the property features mature forestland, dramatic rocky outcrops, vernal pools, and prominent working farmland along both Route 22 (Essex Street) and Chebacco Road. The property connects directly to the trails in Chebacco Woods, a popular year-round destination for outdoor recreation among residents of the region. The purchase agreement is subject to financing.
“This project represents a unique and meaningful conservation opportunity,” says Greenbelt President Chris LaPointe. “The land offers lasting public benefits — supporting local agriculture, protecting water quality, building climate resilience, and expanding access to the outdoors. We’re thankful to the Rich Family for their partnership. They have been the landowners for more than 67 years, and together we are looking forward to rallying community support to finalize the purchase this fall.”
Currently the subject of development proposals, the 133 Essex Street property has long been a focus of public interest for conservation. Permit applications for a 40B modified development were recently refiled. If the purchase by Greenbelt is successful, the development plans will be withdrawn. With its protection, the total conserved acreage surrounding Chebacco Woods will increase by more than 20%, further strengthening this beloved regional resource and its many benefits to the community.
Greenbelt has launched a public fundraising campaign to secure the funds necessary to complete the purchase and permanently protect the land. To date, generous supporters have committed $1,000,000 in private donations toward the $3,700,000 needed to permanently protect this property. Our goal is to raise the remaining $2.7 million by December 31, 2025.
