Janet Ritter Yeager joined Greenbelt’s Go-Getter Trails Challenge in June and quickly climbed to the top of the leaderboard, visiting an impressive 45 properties (and counting) in just four months. Accompanied by her loyal corgi mix, Maeve, she plans to explore all 50 challenge sites — and then some!
“The challenge has been a great way to discover places I might not have visited otherwise,” says Janet, a retired nurse from Georgia who moved to Beverly earlier this year to be closer to her daughter, son-in-law, and grandson in Somerville. “Whenever I visit a site, I also check the GreenbeltGo Trails app to see what else is nearby so I can explore different towns and communities.” She also appreciates the health benefits of spending more time outdoors, noting she has lost more than 10 pounds since starting the challenge.
To date, more than 280 people like Janet have signed up for the Go-Getter Trails Challenge to visit Greenbelt’s protected properties across the region. Running through May 30, 2026, the challenge is free, open to both individuals and teams, and perfect for every pace. Whether you prefer to hike, bike, run, stroll, snowshoe, or simply wander, the challenge offers the perfect excuse to get outside. New sign-ups are always welcome!
In addition to participating in the Go-Getter Trails Challenge, Janet has also volunteered her time with Greenbelt, lending a hand at property cleanups and public events, including the Vineyard Hill Trail Run and Art in the Barn. Being new to the area, she has also connected with a number of other local nonprofits and environmental organizations to volunteer her time and meet new people.
Asked if she has any favorites so far among all the Greenbelt properties she has visited, Janet says they’re all special and unique in their own way but mentioned the Mehaffey Farm Trail in Rowley and Glenny Woodlot in North Andover as being particularly magical.
