Location, Date & Time of Observation:

09:25 AM to 10:28 AM
at: Boxford
Number of Adults Visible: 2
Number of Nestlings Visible: 0
Number of Fledglings Visible: 0
Weather Conditions: 71 degrees, sunny, wind 9 mph
Other Activity: Bird 1 sitting on nest, preening. Stood, stretched and sat back down. I could not see anything beneath her. At 10:01, bird 2 flew in with fish. Made an attempt to scare off a Great Blue Heron who was perched on a nearby snag. Heron did not leave. Bird 2 landed on perch near nest and ate. Still clutching fish, bird 2 made another several passes at heron, causing it to flee. Bird 2 flew back to previous perch and finished eating. At 10:17, bird 2 flew to nest with remainder of fish. Bird 1 took fish and ate with bird 1 standing by side. At this point bird 2 was identified as male, based on plumage. One of the birds then sat on nest and the other, flew to nearby perch. Neither bird was observed feeding offspring, but they seemed intent on looking into nest.
Observation Method: On foot
