Osprey Monitoring & Sightings
Where are Osprey Nesting?
For more than 15 years, Greenbelt has been dedicated to Osprey conservation through the construction and maintenance of nesting platforms, data collection, public education, and collaborative research efforts aimed at protecting this once endangered species. Weather Conditions: 81 degrees, hot, no breeze, sunny/hazy, some clouds, high tide, a beautiful marsh
Other Activity: Female on the nest giving alert/alarm calls taking short fly abouts around the nest -on the nest perch- back in the nest, etc. I look around and see an adult RT Hawk soaring about. She is definitely in defense mode. Male arrives, soaring at 9:40. Female moves to nest and shades chick/s, being a sundial. At 9:55 AM I see sticks in the nest moving "independently!" Yes! Finally! One good sized chick pops it's head up and stands under the shading female! (it was "pancaking" in nest during RTH alert, just like it is suppose to!) The male perches on the nest perch at 10:05. I can clearly see a family of 3! Wonderful!!!
Observation Method: on foot, from the rocky trail most of the time & then a little ways on the marsh, also, the grass & marsh grass trail was nicely mowed (thanks!)
