On Saturday, May 16, Greenbelt will host its annual Birds, Bees & Butterflies event — a free, family-friendly celebration highlighting the essential role pollinators play in keeping our ecosystems healthy and productive. The event will take place from 10:00am to 1:00pm at Cox Reservation in Essex.

Birds, bees, and butterflies play a vital role in the pollination process, transferring pollen between flowers and enabling plants to reproduce, form seeds, and bear fruit. By protecting open space, meadows, and diverse habitats, Greenbelt helps ensure these pollinators have what they need to thrive, sustaining the vibrant landscapes and crops we rely on — without them, ecosystems and food production would suffer.

At this interactive event, families and children of all ages can enjoy a wide range of engaging, hands-on “show-and-tell” activities that bring the pollination process to life, including crafts, a nature-themed scavenger hunt, story time, a touch-a-tractor experience, and live demonstrations by professional beekeepers.

This program is part of Greenbelt’s ongoing Family Nature Series, designed to foster a love of the outdoors and inspire the next generation of environmental stewards. Led by experienced naturalists, this free series invites children, parents, grandparents, and caregivers to explore local landscapes and discover the natural history of Greenbelt properties throughout the seasons.

Birds, Bees & Butterflies is free and open to the public. Space is limited, and advanced registration is required. This program is offered in partnership with North Shore Nature Programs. The event is rain or shine.
