Viburnum Woods/Parsonage Hill

In 2024, Greenbelt and the City of Haverhill partnered to permanently protect 59 acres of forest, trails, and stream habitat on the northern slope of Parsonage Hill. This important conservation effort linked a previously landlocked Greenbelt parcel to a new access point, creating public entry to Viburnum Woods — named for the native mapleleaf viburnums that flourish in its understory. With this addition, the total acreage of the protected property now stands at 111.

This richly forested landscape features a diverse canopy of native hardwoods — including oak, maple, beech, ash, birch, and hickory — and a vibrant understory of ironwood, viburnum, and seasonal wildflowers. At its heart flows Camp Brook, a clean, year-round stream that supports local wildlife, contributes to the Merrimack River watershed, and plays a key role in preserving water quality and ecosystem health.

The surrounding intact forest buffers Camp Brook, helping to mitigate flooding, improve climate resilience, and maintain a healthy watershed. The property also lies adjacent to the landlocked McPherson Woodlot and now serves as the only viable public access point from Haverhill — a critical link for both ecological protection and recreational connectivity.

Trail access and street parking are located along Hannan Ridge Road in Haverhill.
