Nest Name:
SAL-07 - Town Creek Platform

Adult Osprey Activity Observed:
Osprey Perched

Location, Date & Time of Observation:
2021-05-23
09:00 AM to 09:15 AM
at: Salisbury

Number of Adults Visible: 3

Number of Nestlings Visible: 0

Number of Fledglings Visible: 0

Weather Conditions: 70 degrees, clear, light W

Other Activity: The resident female was perched on the perching post on the platform and making warning calls. Another female and the resident male were circling nearby with the male somewhat higher in altitude that the intruding female. After a few circles the male drifted off to the east and the intruder continued to circle in the vicinity while the resident female continued to make warning cries. Evenually the intruding female flew toward the Merrimack River to the south and the resident female quieted down. It is interesting that there continues to be no sign of nest-building even though the pair is together and defending the platform. This must be a young housekeeping pair as the male is not bringing nesting material or being very assertive in defending the territory. I have not observed any mating activity either

Observation Method: from bike on rail trail

General Comments: We had a housekeeping pair in the first year after the platforms were erected at Ring's Island, but the pair were very active in nest-building and built nests on three different platforms by the end of the summer. They also mated frequently. The Town Creek pair is behaving very differently.
