For more than 15 years, Greenbelt has been dedicated to Osprey conservation through the construction and maintenance of nesting platforms, data collection, public education, and collaborative research efforts aimed at protecting this once endangered species. Volunteers submit their sightings online, and the most recent sightings are displayed in real-time.

Other Activity: Male on nest for short while along w/female Female continues to spread wings to shade chicks from heat Male is continuing to bring quality fish to nest and as a result chicks are progressing well. One chick is still more aggressive than the other -- but both are doing well and beginning to show pin feathers.

General Comments: It is wonderful to see how well this "family" is doing. The male is a terrific provider and the female is very dedicated to her chicks.

Weather Conditions: Hot and humid, light wind
Other Activity: Female perched on the side of the nest; Male perched on the Great Bank driftwood nearby; Nestling alert in nest cup. After a few minutes, male flew in to perch on the edge of the nest as well. Nestling was alert during the entire observation. To date, I have only observed one nestling at each of my visits. My conjecture is that only one nestling has survived this season thus far.

Other Activity: Pauline bravely creates a “wing umbrella” to shield the chick from the blazing sun. The excessive heat for 5 days creates a challenge for the osprey family. Bob dutifully keeps bringing in the fish and stands watch on his marsh perch. An occasional boat coming down Castle Neck River causes the parents to soar high overhead and screech at the approaching boat.
