General Comments: Great news. As I started suspecting last week there are two nestlings! Finally saw both on the nest flapping their wings like crazy. Female was on the nest and male was flying overhead. Confirmed with another watcher that all four had been on nest right before I arrived. Male had brought fish. So happy this pair with its rough start, having to rebuild existing nest when city removed it and then changing location to a different light post and building from scratch, has produced two young ones. The other watcher suspects the female was annoyed by the fake osprey the city put on the pole and that’s why they moved. At any rate should be flying soon!

Nest Name:
ESS-07 - Babson Salt Marsh Platform

Adult Osprey Activity Observed:
Osprey Perched

Location, Date & Time of Observation:
2023-07-28
6:40 AM to 7:45 AM
at: Essex

Number of Adults Visible: 1

Number of Nestlings Visible:

Number of Fledglings Visible: 1

Weather Conditions: 77 F, sunny, very light wind

Other Activity: Observed the nest on the way to Round Island, over to Brophy and Dean and then on the way back. The adult and fledgling stayed at the nest the whole time. As no osprey were present at Brophy, perhaps it is the adult and fledgling from Brophy since Babson has been unoccupied. Fledgling looked identical to the adult except for light speckling on the wings.

Observation Method: by kayak

Name: Shirley Singleton

Nest Name:
ESS-05 - Singleton Salt Marsh Platform

Weather Conditions: Clear, sunny, humid, 77 degrees

Other Activity: Pauline continues to encourage the 2nd chick to fledge. She sits on the marsh perch with her backed turned toward the nest. The chick is staring at her while he is balancing on the edge of the nest. The first born chick has been flying and also doing some nest cleanup( rearranging sticks etc - I have never seen a young osprey do this behavior before).

Observation Method: Back deck

General Comments: Yesterday, the first born was showing the younger chick how to vigorously flap the wings.
