For more than 15 years, Greenbelt has been dedicated to Osprey conservation through the construction and maintenance of nesting platforms, data collection, public education, and collaborative research efforts aimed at protecting this once endangered species. Volunteers submit their sightings online, and the most recent sightings are displayed in real-time.

Other Activity: The second born has not only fledged, but also has had a full weekend of flying lessons with his dad. I watched in awe as the new flyer started practicing swooping into a salt panne. After 7 crash landings in the water, the young bird finally started to lightly touch his talons in water before climbing up toward the sky. Bob, the dad, patiently would show how it is done.

Observation Method: From deck

General Comments: No birds are on the nest now. They seem to congregate at the site around 7:00 in the morning and 4:30pm to enjoy a meal as a family.

Weather Conditions: 71 F, cloudy, very little wind

Other Activity: An osprey was on the nest perch. When perched, it looked like an adult. After a few minutes it started calling, and flew down into the nest, continuing to call. An adult flew in, dropped off a fish, and flew away. The osprey in the nest, was then turned sideways and white tips at the end of the feathers were just visible. The young osprey began feeding itself.

General Comments: Olivia was feeding one of the fledglings on the nest. We are seeing the 2 surviving fledglings frequently.

Other Activity: The young osprey on Ring's Island fledged today. The resident female and the fledgling have been perched together on platform 3 and the male has been perched on platform 4. Then the female flew to the nest on platform 2 and was shortly followed by the fledgling who perched on the perching post. Then the fledgling took a shaky flight back to platform 3. Definitely testing its wings under the supervision of its mother. You can add 1 more fledgling to your total.

General Comments: One of the young osprey has fledged! The other seems reluctant. When we arrived one was alone on the nest. Eventually the parents and fledgling arrived and out on a show. Flying in soaring circles all around the ballfield.

General Comments: Thebosprey in the nest appear small-shoulder barely cresting the edge of the nest. So I made the assumption that it was the fledgling. S/he did not ove during the time I was there and there was no other osprey activity.
