Where are Osprey Nesting?

For more than 15 years, Greenbelt has been dedicated to Osprey conservation through the construction and maintenance of nesting platforms, data collection, public education, and collaborative research efforts aimed at protecting this once endangered species. Adult Osprey Activity Observed:
Osprey Actively Building Nest

Location, Date & Time of Observation:
2019-04-04
12:55 PM to 02:09 PM
at: Boxford

Number of Adults Visible: 2

Number of Nestlings Visible: 0

Number of Fledglings Visible: 0

Weather Conditions: 45 degrees, sunny, wind 17mph

Other Activity: Both birds perched on parallel branches of a snag, with tree trunk in between. They appeared to be eating. Bird 1 (speckled chest- presumably female) stayed in that location the entire time, while Bird 2 (white chest - presumably male) flew between snags and nest, at times flying off and returning with nest material.

Observation Method: On foot

General Comments: Day before had strong winds (reaching 35 mph). Discovered a trail leading to the opposite side of the marsh, offering a different vantage point, if not a bit closer to nest. Should make for varied observations, if and when chicks arrive. It should be noted that this nest is the third separate nest/tree since birds were discovered. The 2017 nest, while successful, broke off that winter, 2018 nest was abandoned mid-season, making this the third location. While snags here are sparse, the pair manages to find suitable ones to nest in.

Nest Name:
ESS-06 - Soginese Creek Platform

Adult Osprey Activity Observed:
Osprey Perched

Location, Date & Time of Observation:
2019-04-03
3:15 to 3:30
at: Essex

Number of Adults Visible: 1

Number of Nestlings Visible:

Number of Fledglings Visible:

Weather Conditions: blue skies, high 50s. light wind

Other Activity: During observation, potentially two osprey perched on nest and one quickly took flight chasing away 2-3 other intruders. The first osprey stayed perched and they second one flew away. Viewed from Island Rd so difficult to confirm that the second was an osprey and the first one perched I assume was an osprey because it remained on the nest. The distance made confirmation difficult.

Other Activity: Both osprey were busy rebuilding the nest. The nest was intact late Sunday but only a few sticks were there Monday morning.
