For more than 15 years, Greenbelt has been dedicated to Osprey conservation through the construction and maintenance of nesting platforms, data collection, public education, and collaborative research efforts aimed at protecting this once endangered species. Volunteers submit their sightings online, and the most recent sightings are displayed in real-time.

General Comments: I was away in Iceland and asked my neighbor to keep track of the osprey activity while I was away. She reported 5 ospreys circling the platform on this date. None of them landed.

Other Activity: male osprey perched on platform 2. Female arrived and perched on platform 2. Male then flew over the female and circled for many minutes calling loudly. Eventually the female flew to the nest on platform 1 and the male followed and perched with her--Reunion! My neighbor reported that both have been in residence since and have been mating frequently.

Other Activity: Male and female perched together on canoe racks below platform 1 to get out of the cold wind and rain in the shelter of tall phragmites. Male is eating a medium-sized flounder.

General Comments: I returned from vacation on 4-4 and the osprey pair has been present and together consistently. It is rare to have both of them away from the platforms. I think they are guarding their territory.
