Weather Conditions: 24 degrees, partly cloudy, 20 mph NW
Other Activity: A mature bald eagle is perched on the nest platform. A female osprey carrying a small fish in its talons flew in from the east and began to harass the eagle repeatedly by diving at it. The eagle stood its ground, rising slightly from the nest to challenge the attacking osprey with its beak. Eventually another mature bald eagle flew toward the nest platform at a high altitude and challenged the harassing osprey. The osprey climbed above the eagle and the eagle chased it somewhat lazily. Both eventually flew off east toward the ocean at high altitude. The perched eagle continues to perch on the nest.
Observation Method: from bedroom window
General Comments: The possession and control of the nest platform is in flux.

Other Activity: Female osprey perched on nest on platform 1. I heard her make an intruder call and saw a second female osprey approaching the nest. The resident female flew to chase it away and returned to the platform. The second osprey continued to circle nearby and was attacked whenever it came near. This continued for some time when I saw a male osprey diving from very high above right toward the nest. The resident female gave a welcoming cry and the male landed briefly before flying to challenge the other circling female. The resident female joined the chase and they all flew off up the Merrimack. About an hour later the resident female returned to the nest and was joined by the male who mated with her and then flew off. The female has been bringing nesting material mostly to the nest platform, but occasionally to platform 2. The male is not present often and it makes me wonder if this may be a new pair trying to use the old nest.
