Osprey Blog

Annie laid her first egg sometime between 6pm on April 20 and 6am on April 21 - in the last image yesterday the nest was empty and first image today she was incubating. This is an early egg for her; in 2025 was April 30 and 2024 it was April 27. I can not give an explanation for this, other than Annie and Squam continue to mature as a pair, and earlier egg laying may be a result of that. But that is a guess. More probable is the fact that most established Osprey pairs in our region lay their eggs between April 15-30.

I expect Annie will produce more eggs this week, probably 3 in total, which has been her norm. Last year you may recall Annie laid 3 eggs but only 2 hatched and both fledged - Kate and Ed.

As I review the 400+ online nest activity reports that have been submitted, many pairs - more than 50% - are incubating eggs now. Other pairs are still arranging nests and getting settled in. Then there are, as always, some unsettled pairs (younger birds no doubt) that we are watching and waiting to see where they select as a nest site. If you are interested in know more about activity at any particular nest, all the submitted reports are available for viewing at www.ecga.org/conservation/osprey/monitoring-sightings. And there is a search feature that allows you to refine your search and select a particular nest, or town or monitors name.

Thanks for watching!
