Osprey Blog

My apologies for the gap in blog entries… I was on vacation and traveling most of last week. I was checking in on Annie and Squam’s activity from afar, and like all of you, what I observed was a lot of nest building activity. Typically Annie lays her first egg in the last week of April. In 2024, the first egg came on April 27. So I believe the nesting season is unfolding in a normal way. For those of you who have been watching the webcam more than me last week and you saw what you thought was some unusual behavior (I did get some feedback commenting on this), I don’t have an explanation. But I am pretty confident that we will all observe a nest with eggs in it over the next 10 days or so. Annie and Squam are certainly present on the nest and the nest cup looks deep and ready for eggs as the photo shows.

Around the region, more and more reports are making their way to me with news of Osprey showing up on old nests. Some reports are suggesting Osprey are incubating eggs already. No reports yet of new nests but that usually comes a little later in the season as younger Osprey find a mate and a nest site. The weather has been improving with warmer temps and less rain, so I expect nesting activity to remain very active in the coming weeks.
