New England Biolabs® (NEB®) is a global supplier of molecular biology reagents for the life sciences. The NEB facility is located on a 160-acre property that includes mixed forest, wetlands, and agricultural land. Of this, 112 acres are permanently protected under a Greenbelt conservation restriction. A shared-use trail system runs throughout the property, passing through agricultural fields, woodlands, and wetlands. The trail system is maintained by the Essex County Trails Association.
NEB is an active campus that includes the main laboratory facility, as well as several historic buildings that have been restored and converted to corporate offices. NEB also has an on-site childcare center. For the safety of all visitors, please remain on sidewalks and trails whenever possible. Additionally, as required under the conservation restriction, dogs must be kept on leash and horses must remain on designated trails.
Originally the historic Proctor Estate, the property was purchased in 1955 by the Catholic Church and served first as a seminary and later as the Don Bosco retreat center. NEB founder Don Comb, a passionate advocate for biodiversity and environmental protection, purchased the property in 1999. In 2026, Greenbelt helped permanently protect 112 acres of the property through a conservation restriction.
NEB headquarters is located on the ancestral land of the Agawam and Pawtucket people. NEB honors the land and the people who have stewarded it over many generations and pays respect to the elders of these communities, both past and present.
NEB carefully manages the property to protect biodiversity and native habitats. The property is home to a wide range of wildlife, including otters, bobolinks, bluebirds, deer, foxes, and coyotes. Fields are mowed annually in late fall or early spring to protect vulnerable grassland bird habitat.
