In early 2026, Greenbelt will launch a campaign to permanently protect approximately 125 acres of forest, farmland, wetlands, and trails in Wenham. Together, these natural resources provide vital wildlife habitat and help safeguard a public drinking water supply that serves nearly 90,000 people. The project will also open a scenic trail system for public use for the first time.

The Streeter property in Wenham, also known as “Old Farm,” comprises 140 acres, including two existing houses. Greenbelt will work with Historic New England to protect the 1689 National Register-listed main home and the surrounding 12 acres with a Historic Preservation Restriction before selling it to a private buyer. Additionally, Greenbelt is exploring options for the sale of the smaller cottage on 3 acres, potentially as an affordable housing unit.

“Unprotected land of this size and beauty is truly rare in Wenham,” says Chris LaPointe, Greenbelt President. “We’re incredibly fortunate to be working with the Streeter family, who have been dedicated stewards of this property for more than 50 years, to permanently conserve it and open this trail system to the public.

Greenbelt plans to acquire the remaining approximately 125 acres for permanent protection, with funding and project closure anticipated in spring 2026. The Town of Wenham recently received a $425,000 state grant through the Local Acquisitions for Natural Diversity (LAND) Program to support the project. This funding, along with previously committed Community Preservation Act funding, will enable the Town to hold a conservation restriction on the property, ensuring its long-term protection.

“While Greenbelt has protected a significant amount of land in Wenham, this is a great opportunity to create a meaningful public conservation area,” says Chris. “We’re excited to start the new year by engaging the community and sharing more about this historically significant property.”
