Greenbelt’s new NextGen community brings together young go-getters and changemakers who care deeply about land conservation, the environment, and ensuring equitable access to nature across Essex County. Designed to be welcoming and action-oriented, the group offers opportunities for participants to connect with like-minded peers, learn from Greenbelt staff, and make a meaningful impact — all while having a bit of fun along the way.
“By engaging younger supporters — and we use that open-ended term intentionally, without specifying an age range — the NextGen community brings fresh energy and ideas to our conservation and stewardship work,” says Rachel Horgan, Director of Development & Community Engagement. “It also cultivates the next generation of conservation advocates, expands our community reach, and ensures Greenbelt’s long-term sustainability.”
To help realize this vision for a dynamic NextGen community, a governance committee was formed last year to brainstorm on activities and initiatives that would engage younger supporters. Working closely with Greenbelt staff, the committee offers thoughtful guidance that has helped shape a number of well-received events, including several “Shears and Beers” trail cleanups, a sunset river cruise, and a beekeeping demonstration.
Building on this strong foundation, plans are already underway to expand opportunities for engagement in the year ahead, including special nature walks, brewery meet-ups, and volunteer stewardship projects. The committee is also exploring ways to tie in with some of Greenbelt’s signature events, such as Art in the Barn.
“We understand that people in the early stages of their careers or raising young families may find it challenging to carve out time, so our goal is to make participation as easy, flexible, and accessible as possible,” adds Rachel. “For anyone interested in getting involved, we encourage you to attend an event, share your ideas, and play an active role in the NextGen community as it continues to evolve.”
