Learn to look closely at mushrooms in this combination Identification and Sketching workshop.

We’ll begin with a mini mushroom foray, gathering what we can find and bringing it back to our home base for ID. Once our fungi expert Maria Pinto has helped you identify key features of mushrooms, looking at color, size, gills, stem, substrate, and even some features that can’t be see with the naked eye, we’ll turn the teaching over to our artist-instructor Jess Yurwitz, to help us translate what we see to the page. You’ll choose a few mushrooms each to draw and color, with pointers from both experts. You’ll leave with several pages of fungal art, tips for future sketching and foraging forays, and, if we’re lucky, some delicious forest treats.

Participants, please bring:

  • sketchbook or watercolor paper
  • pencil
  • colored pencils or simple watercolor set and brush
  • a basket or paper bag
  • a camp chair, if you want
  • a pocket knife for harvesting mushrooms

Greenbelt provides:

  • hand lenses
  • paper lunch bags to (hopefully) take home goodies
  • folding chairs
  • tables
  • snacks
