Hans Morris

Newbury, Massachusetts

Total Acres: 25

Year Conserved: 2011

Description

Greenbelt conserved the 25-acre Hans Morris Reservation in 2010 in partnership with the MA Division of Fisheries & Wildlife and the landowner, who frequently enjoyed long walks in these grasslands and woods with his grandson, for whom the site is named.  Inspired by the natural beauty of this landscape, and the special memories shared here, the land was acquired for public enjoyment and for the benefit of future generations.

Special Features

The Hans Morris Reservation abuts the 1,550 acre Martin Burns Wildlife Management Area, and is characterized by sweeping grasslands that offer excellent nesting habitat for grassland birds such as bobolinks, eastern meadowlarks and a variety of other avian species.  A meandering stream and wetland separate the grassland area from a forest with mixed hardwoods and conifers.  White-tailed deer and eastern wild turkey are both common in the wooded areas, so keep a sharp lookout while hiking the loop trail, which departs from the parking area, crosses the field and wetland (on a short boardwalk) and returns.
