Carter Fields
Boxford/North Andover, Massachusettts
Total Acres: 85 acres
Year Conserved: 2004
Property Description
Carter Fields is located in an area with a significant base of conserved land owned by the town of North Andover, including the Mazurenko Farm (104 acres), Carter Hill (27 acres), and Barker Hill (55 acres). All of these parcels and Carter Fields are part of the Lake Cochichewick watershed, North Andover's sole source of drinking water.
Special Features
A large blue-heron rookery becomes active in May and June, as up to 70 pairs of herons create annual nests at this site. Not an original feature of this property, it was created by beaver activity that dammed a nearby stream, creating a wetland of dead, standing trees. This local establishment is another example of the beaver’s reemergence over the last two decades and a reminder of our interwoven ecology.
